Intermediate sanctions are the middle ground of punishment between incarceration and probation. There is a wide range of different forms of intermediate sanctions. All forms fall within three different categories: administered primarily by the judiciary, administered in the community, and administered in institutions and the community. The first category, intermediate sanctions administered primarily by the judiciary, is composed of fines, restitution, and forfeiture. Fines are sums of money paid to the state by a convicted person. Restitution is a sum of money or service paid by the offender to the victim.
